Who is Mad About Beans?

Sven and Sabrina Czesla grew up in Germany, where coffee was something you bought pre-ground at the supermarket. Sven's passion for coffee started in 2012. In 2014 the couple moved to Melbourne. Sven left his job as a project manager in renewable energy to immerse himself in the coffee scene. He worked as a barista, went to cuppings and did training where he could, including a roasting course in Germany. They started Mad About Beans on 15 November 2017. Today the family-owned roaster is based in Grovedale, Geelong, roasting in their garage and only ever to order. They aim to work with smaller importers and small-batch coffee farmers, and Sven has worked directly with farmers in Indonesia and Guatemala, including visits to Lisa and Leo's organic coffee farm in Simalungun, North Sumatra. In their words: "We purposefully don't go for the cheapest option."
