In 1989, Annie and Franco left Sydney for the Byron Bay hinterland. On twelve acres, they planted coffee trees one by one. They picked the cherries and roasted on a 10-kilo Greek roaster Franco had tweaked until it ran just right. The farm grew into a business. Franco chased flavour and consistency at the roaster. Annie got the coffee out to cafés and retailers. Today Byron Bay Coffee Company is an independent roastery supplying cafés and retailers across Australia and Japan. The roaster is now Italian and 60 kilos strong. The beans come from around the world, still roasted in the Byron hinterland three times a week. In their words: "our roots remain the same: family, hard work, respect for the land, and a deep love for premium coffee."
