Who is The Bean Pedlar?
In 1887, the Mattern family opened a hardware store on this site. It stayed in the family for four generations. In 2019, Robert Drakeford's family took over. Today the building is The Bean Pedlar, a family-owned café and roastery in Yarram, Gippsland, Victoria. A mural inside traces the building's past, from the hardware years to coffee fields and beans. It even features Victor Hugo Mattern and the family dog, Dougal. The coffee has its own kind of continuity. The Ironmonger blend is sourced from the same regions and has held its flavour profile despite market fluctuations. Coffee is roasted weekly in small batches, with signature roasts packed fresh every Monday. Origins include Ethiopia, Brazil, Colombia and El Salvador.
