It started with a heat gun and a colander. Andrew Kelly began roasting coffee in his backyard, curious whether it could taste better. That curiosity became Auction Rooms, an open café and roastery in North Melbourne where everything was on display. Since then, The Age Good Café Guide has twice named it Melbourne's best café. As the roasting grew, a dedicated roastery opened down the road, and Small Batch has been roasting since 2009. Today the focus is farm-gate sourcing: buying green coffee in parchment and working closely with producers in Colombia and Guatemala. Small Batch runs a peer-to-peer regenerative farming program with growers in Colombia, and often pays months ahead of delivery. As they put it, they believe coffee can be better. Auction Rooms was the café; Small Batch is the coffee that made it famous.
