Ten quality-control checks stand between the farm and your cup. Six happen before the beans reach the roastery, and four more after. That attention to detail is the point at Nine Yards Coffee. The specialty roastery is based in Brookvale, on Sydney's Northern Beaches, and has worked directly with producers since 2013. It works side by side with producers in Brazil, Colombia and Ethiopia, and sources from small-scale farms. In the roaster's words: "We pay a little extra for the raw product to support initiatives that make a genuine impact." That means education programs for farmers and equipment upgrades. Coffee is roasted to order in small batches, with traceable lots. The range includes blends, single-producer Colombian coffee and a decaf blend. Cafés and retailers across Australia buy it wholesale.
