Who is Miss Cocoa's Coffee Roastery?
Two decades ago, Queensland's coffee roasting scene was just getting started. By the roastery's own account, Jasen Barrie was the first to roast and sell single-origin coffees in the state. In 2019 he set up Miss Cocoa's, an on-site roastery and drive-thru café. It roasts in Urraween, Hervey Bay, Queensland, on Boat Harbour Drive. It was Hervey Bay's first dedicated drive-thru for freshly roasted coffee and fresh food. The coffee is roasted every week, in small batches. The roastery says weather, bean quality and the seasons influence every batch, and it dials in the roast for changing weather and humidity. Sourcing includes single origins, beans from Brazil and Papua New Guinea, and a Swiss Water decaf. Jasen also led the push for eco-friendly packaging and biodegradable takeaway cups. His focus on reducing waste led to an eco-friendly plant food made from recycled coffee grounds.
