In 2019 Manta Ray took first place at the ECRE Roaster Smackdown, winning both the professional and public blind-cupping categories. That result came after years of groundwork: eight years learning to roast, and eight earlier years in cafés and hospitality. Much of the craft was learned at Code Black, loading batch after batch. The detail shows in the cup. Manta Ray colour-sorts its roasted beans, guided by a simple roastery rule: the devil's in the details. The roastery runs open, with no soundproofing, so the work is there to see and hear. The range covers single-origin and blends from Colombia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Honduras and Brazil, plus anaerobic naturals and decaf.
