About Dark Horse Coffee Roasters
Bill and Chris Spathis have been in coffee since the mid-70s. It started in the family coffee lounge in Melbourne's CBD, then moved to their own café businesses. In the early 90s the brothers went to Sydney and opened Retro Café, next door to The State Theatre. It ran for about 15 years and became a Sydney institution. In 2005 they came home to Melbourne and opened Decoy Café in Flinders Lane. Roasting came next. In their words: "Customers enjoyed the coffee so much that we were selling it to them to brew at home. Dark Horse Coffee Roasters was born and the business has taken off." They moved to larger premises at 303 Exhibition Street, where they now roast on-site in small batches. Today Dark Horse is still family-owned and still roasting in the CBD. A range of single origins from growing regions including Colombia, Brazil, Ethiopia and Kenya, fairtrade and organic options, and every batch rested in airtight valve tins before it ships.
