Old Quarter started with a single pallet. In 2017, co-founders Yose Le Cerf and Amy Hicks imported 700kg of coffee from a K'ho family in Vietnam. The pair met while studying environmental science. Years of travel followed, and Vietnam kept a special place in their hearts. The name comes from Hanoi's Old Quarter. That's where, "on sweaty plastic stools", they dreamt of combining travel and coffee to bring about positive change. Today Old Quarter roasts in small batches in Ballina. They trade as well as roast, buying direct from smallholder farmers across Southeast Asia. Farmers set their price, and harvests are bought in advance. The mission is plain: "to show the world that Southeast Asian coffees are serious global contenders." They say 90% of their coffees are grown by ethnic minorities.
