Who is North Queensland Gold Coffee?
NQ Gold Coffee now sits with Skybury Coffee, a fellow Mareeba-based coffee grower. Its story starts in 1960. That year Bruno Maloberti bought 90 acres of farmland just outside Mareeba. For 20 years he grew tobacco. When the tobacco industry declined, many farmers had to adapt and grow alternative crops. Combining their Italian heritage and "a can-do attitude", the Malobertis turned to traditional methods of coffee production. Thirty thousand coffee trees later, the family were producing NQ Gold roasted coffee beans for the Australian market. Bruno welcomed visitors with farm tours. Now Bruno and his daughter Maria are handing over the reins to their neighbours, the MacLaughlin family, owners of Skybury Coffee. Skybury continues to offer freshly roasted NQ Gold Coffee, and head roaster Candy MacLaughlin manages its day-to-day operations. What you get is a coffee with more than 40 years of Maloberti family farming behind the name.
