Who is Madella Coffee?

The Sciacca family has farmed the Mourilyan area for over 100 years. Coffee arrived in the 1980s, as a trial to see how Arabica would grow commercially. The mature crop proved to be of "superior quality". Even so, the family moved into bananas for many years. The interest in coffee stayed. In 2000, sons Steven and Joseph helped plant around 130 acres. Then cyclone Larry devastated the plantation just as the beans were ready to harvest. The family replanted, and cyclone Yasi hit next. Today Madella is family-owned and roasts daily in Mourilyan, Queensland. The coffee is single origin and 100% Arabica, grown in rich alluvial soil on the banks of the South Johnstone River. Harvesting, hulling, drying and roasting all happen on location. Tours run on request.
