In 2000, Craig Hayward bought a 250 acre share of his family farm. He had sold his pub in the Northern Territory. He and his wife, Tamara, came back to the land to settle down and start a family. Then they tried something different. They planted Arabica coffee trees. Craig says the move worked and he hasn't looked back. Today Mackellar Range grows its coffee in Hogarth Range, Northern New South Wales, about 70km inland from Byron Bay. Their coffee is 100% Arabica, Australian-grown and sun-dried. It is grown free of pesticides and processed free of chemicals. The setting does a lot of the work. Rich volcanic soil and a drier micro-climate than the coast produce "slower ripening naturally sweet beans". They roast to order, twice a week, and took Gold in the Australian grown coffee category at the Golden Bean 2011/2012.
