About Blackstar Coffee Roasters
When Martin Richards returned from New Zealand in 2006, Brisbane had nowhere to buy specialty coffee. He had been roasting for Peoples Coffee in Wellington. In Blackstar's words, "it was clear what needed to be done." Roasting began in the old footy sheds at Souths Leagues Club, under the Moreton Bay figs. A Probat L12 arrived in May 2007. By July, Blackstar had its first wholesale customer: Jamies Espresso Bar in Fortitude Valley. In 2008 the original store opened in a back street of inner-city West End. Students and creatives followed. A stall at Davies Park Markets helped. It became a Brisbane institution. Today the roastery is in East Brisbane and the café still trades at 44 Thomas St, West End. Revolution Espresso has been the backbone of the range for over a decade. Green coffee is bought direct from producers where possible, with fair prices to farmers written into the procurement policy.
